Grandma's Legacy by: Brenda Fish When I was little, I loved going to Grandma's house. She always kept her cookie jar full of treats for helpful little girls and boys. When I grew up some and started baking, she kept me supplied with Watkins cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. "They're the best", she explained. "Always start with the best ingredients and your recipes will come out just fine". My grandmother was always doing things for others in her family and in her neighborhood. She had a beautiful rose garden that strangers would stop by and admire in town, and she kept a vegetable garden out in the country at our farm. She would get up at 4:00 am to do her housekeeping so she could get out to the farm by 7:00 or so to do her garden weeding in the cool hours of the morning. Then she would pack up the harvest and divide it up and share it with her neighbors. Sometimes I suspect that all this activity was an excuse to go visiting! In addition to her garden, she found time for fund-raising projects for the Ladies' Aid at the church. She sold greeting cards, and she also sold Watkins products. When grandma reached the age where she was no longer able to continue selling Watkins, I started buying other brands of vanilla and cinnamon, and I just wasn't happy. It just wasn't as good. When I found out that Watkins is available on line, I was thrilled. My grandma passed away earlier this year. To honor my grandma's legacy, I will be donating a significant portion of the earnings to the Disaster recovery fund of my church. |
